The EU called the social network X (formerly Twitter) the largest source of Russian disinformation.

Most major platforms have agreed to work with the EU on a voluntary code of conduct that aims to set standards for fact-checking.
X, former Twitter, which is no longer subject to the code, is the platform with the highest proportion of posts containing false information or disinformation… So my message on Twitter: you must comply with strict laws, and we are monitoring what you do, said the vice-president. President of the European Commission Vera Jourova.
She noted that the influx of Russian disinformation is now particularly acute in Slovakia, where elections will be held on Saturday.
Jourova made her remarks at a meeting with signatories of the Code of Practice on Disinformation in Brussels. It was signed by 44 companies, including such giants as Facebook, Google, YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn.
X, when it was still called Twitter, left the voluntary Code in May this year.
Jourova, at a meeting with signatories of the Code, stressed that “the risk of disinformation is particularly serious” due to Russia’s war against Ukraine and on the eve of the European Parliament elections in 2024.
The Russian state has entered into a war of ideas to pollute our information space with half-truths and lies, to create a false image that democracy is no better than autocracy,” she noted.
The EC Vice-President said that X, which has withdrawn from the agreement, is the platform with the highest percentage of publications containing false or disinformation.
Jourova added that the European Commission has received reports from the signatories, each of which has more than 200 pages. In it, social platforms described how they monitored and combated disinformation about Russia’s war in Ukraine.
For example, Google reported that from January to April 2023, YouTube terminated more than 400 channels involved in coordinated influence operations associated with the Russian state-sponsored Internet Research Agency (IRA).
Meta said it has expanded its fact-checking partnership to 26 organizations covering 22 languages in the EU, which now also includes Czech and Slovak.
TikTok’s fact-checking efforts span Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and 17 European languages. This became possible, in particular, thanks to a partnership with Reuters. In this context, 832 war-related videos were reviewed, of which 211 were removed.
Microsoft noted that it found almost 800 thousand war-related search queries in its Bing Search engine.
