This was stated by the head of the Commission for the Investigation of War Crimes and Other Abuses Committed during Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine, Eric Myose, reports Reuters.
In some cases, torture was used with such cruelty that it resulted in the death of the victim, he emphasized.
Asked at a briefing about the number of cases of torture resulting in death, commission member Pablo de Greiff noted that this was impossible to establish due to limited access, but noted that it was “quite a large number, and … they come from very different regions of the country, both close and far from the front line.”
In August and September, Mjose’s commission visited parts of Ukraine previously occupied by Russian troops, in particular the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. It was established that torture is used primarily in places of detention that are under the control of the Russian government, and mainly against people accused of being Ukrainian informants.
The UN commission has previously said that abuses committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including the use of torture, may constitute crimes against humanity.
Mjose said the commission’s attempts to contact the Russian Federation on this issue remained unanswered. Moscow was given the opportunity to respond to the allegations at the UN Human Rights Council hearings, but no Russian representative appeared.
