From Saturday, September 16, cars with Russian license plates will no longer be allowed into Finland.

    .

This was stated by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The decisions will be officially announced on September 15, reports Yle.

Finland is introducing a ban on the entry of passenger cars registered in Russia, following Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Finland will make an exception for EU citizens permanently residing in Russia and members of their families, as well as diplomats and persons equivalent to them. People traveling to the country for humanitarian reasons will also be allowed through.

The restrictions will also apply to Russian cars already in Finland, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said in response to questions from Yle. They must leave the country six months in advance, that is, until March 16.

The only European country into which cars with Russian license plates can so far be entered will be Norway (there is a border crossing in the Murmansk region).

Previously, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia introduced a ban on the entry of cars with Russian license plates, justifying this decision with the recommendations of the European Commission.

On September 8, the European Commission issued an explanation of how EU countries should apply the ban on the import of sanctioned goods from Russia, including cars, personal clothing, and hygiene items.

The European Commission then clarified that customs authorities should focus on imported cars, while other items, including clothing, should be subject to a “proportionate and reasonable” ban.

At the time of publication of the news, there was no complete information about what will be done with cars with Russian license plates already on the territory of the European Union. Latvia has stated that it will not confiscate such vehicles. The Estonian authorities reported that they would announce their decision later.
