A Liberian-flagged merchant ship was hit by several missiles fired by a Russian warship. Ukrainian air defense successfully repelled the attack.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Russian troops attacked a civilian cargo ship with missiles in the Black Sea, but Ukrainians shot down the missiles. Sunak said this in a speech to parliament, Reuters reported late Monday, September 11.
He clarified that the incident happened on August 24. As Sunak noted, “thanks to declassified intelligence,” it became known that a merchant ship flying the flag of Liberia was fired by several missiles, including Kalibr missiles fired by a Russian warship.
According to the British Foreign Ministry, the cargo ship is docked at the seaport of Odessa. The ship was not damaged, as the missiles were successfully shot down by the Ukrainian air defense system, the department added.
We remind you that on August 26, the bulk carrier Primus sailed from Odessa to the Bulgarian port of Varna under the flag of Liberia. The ship arrived in Ukraine on February 20, 2022 from the port of Perama in Greece. He was able to leave Odessa with the help of the humanitarian corridor opened by Kiev on August 10.
The British Foreign Office emphasized that the attack on the cargo ship was “a clear demonstration of Russia’s attempts to strangle the Ukrainian economy, as well as President Vladimir Putin’s disregard for civilian lives and interests of countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.”
“Putin is trying to win a war he can’t win, and these attacks show how desperate he is. By targeting Ukrainian cargo ships and infrastructure, Russia is destroying the entire world, ” said British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley.
As reported, Ukraine has opened corridors in the Black Sea for the passage of civilian merchant ships, mainly those stuck in ports after the start of the Russian invasion.
