Turkey’s full membership in the European Union is unthinkable; Brussels should develop a different format of cooperation, the Austrian leader believes.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer believes that the European Union should refuse to accept Turkey into its ranks and develop a new format of cooperation with this country. He said this in an interview with Welt.
“We support further rapprochement between Ankara and Brussels, but Turkey’s full membership in the EU is unthinkable for us,” he emphasized.
Nehammer noted that “it is important for countries to be honest in their dealings with each other,” so the EU should formally end Turkey’s membership negotiations, which have been frozen for years. He noted that the new partnership format should be based “on mutual trust and cooperation on economic and political issues.”
Let’s remember that in 2018, Turkey’s EU accession negotiations were suspended. Work to strengthen the customs union between Ankara and Brussels is also on hold. At the same time, Turkey’s status as a candidate for joining the European Union was not revoked because of the refugee deal.
However, in July 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was ready to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO, but asked the EU to clear the way for Ankara to join the European Community.
