France24 writes that rescuers cannot reach the most affected areas due to roads destroyed by the earthquake.
A CNN report notes that the geophysical center of Morocco reported that an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred in the Atlas Mountains region.
The US Geological Survey estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.8 and said it occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 km.
The mountainous area where the earthquake occurred is located about 70 km southwest of Marrakech.
The earthquake began after 23.00 local time. It was also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira.
Several buildings collapsed in Marrakech’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local television showed footage of the mosque’s minaret falling.
Official information about the crash appeared only a few hours later.
At first, Reuters, citing a local official, reported dozens of deaths. Most of them, he said, are located in inaccessible mountainous areas.
The Interior Ministry later reported that at least 296 people were killed and 153 injured.
