About 1,100 US troops are stationed in Niger, where the military coup took place.
The US government is making a plan in case of evacuation of American bases using drones, which are used to fight terrorists on the territory of Niger, where the military has seized power. This was said by the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, General James Hecker, AP reports.
According to him, the United States is looking for countries in the region “where they can establish partnerships to then transfer their assets there.” The general did not begin to report which countries the States are considering as an alternative location for the deployment of counter-terrorist forces in West Africa.
“The issue has been put under investigation,” he said. “The Pentagon is considering where to locate the base, but the solution to this issue will be more diplomatic,” Hecker said.
In evacuation planning, he added, such scenarios are foreseen when Americans leave at a convenient time for them, and in case they need to take the necessary property and leave in a hurry.
“But, of course, there is hope to have a peaceful, diplomatic solution to this problem, and we will not have to leave the country,” the general added.
US air bases are located in Niamey and Agadez. About 1,100 US troops are stationed in Niger.
It will be recalled that on July 26, part of the Niger presidential guard opposed President Mohammed Bazum. He was captured and removed from power.
Army General Abdurahman Tchiani was declared as the new leader of the country.
