Latvian border guards will turn to the country’s Defense Forces and the National Police for assistance in guarding the border with Belarus.
Latvia announced the mobilization of border service workers in connection with the need to strengthen the protection of the state’s external border. This was announced on Tuesday, August 15, in a statement by the Latvian State Border Service.
“Now the provision of annual leave to the officers of the State Border Service is stopped and the officers who are on annual leave are deprived of them,” the statement said.
The decision to mobilize the border guards was made “in connection with the sharp increase of the hybrid threat at the border, when 96 attempts to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border were recorded every day.”
Latvian border guards noted that “the increase in the flow of migrants is caused by the increased involvement of the Belarusian authorities.”
Due to the artificially created regime of Lukashenka, the migration crisis on the borders of Belarus with the EU, Latvia introduced a state of emergency in August 2021 in some areas and it has continued since then.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania intends to close two of the six checkpoints on the border with Belarus to reduce the risk of provocations and threats on the border.
