Residents of Zaporozhye will independently decide the issues of renaming the city. Members of the National Commission, together with the working group, decided to refer this issue to the third group, namely, at the discretion of citizens.

Recall that on June 27, the National Commission for State Language Standards proposed to rename Zaporozhye and more than 1,400 villages, towns and cities of Ukraine. This was explained by the discrepancy between the norms of the Ukrainian language and the involvement of some names in the imperial policy of Russia.
Taras Kremen, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, said that the commission’s decision should be canceled and called for a new one. According to him, there are many names on the list that meet the standards of the state language, in particular, Zaporozhye, Pobeda, Zvezdnoye, Mirnoye, Mayskoye, Mayak, etc. A letter was sent to the MES about this.
The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy noted that the commission compiled the list of names incorrectly. In addition, there is no expertise of the Ukrainian Language Institute of the National Academy of Sciences.
The language ombudsman said that the commission went beyond its powers, and the list contains a large number of names of settlements that meet the standards of the state language
On June 28, the National Commission announced that the proposal to rename Zaporozhye is only advisory. They explained that they were not going to consider renaming the city of Zaporozhye, but received an appeal from local residents.
The National Commission for State Language Standards recommended that a possible renaming of the city of Zaporozhye be considered, pointing out that the name may not comply with lexical norms. Members of the National Commission recommend to propose a new name for Zaporozhye or provide a justification for retaining the current name.
Local authorities must submit their recommendations within six months. If during this period the local authorities do not give their explanations, then this issue will be considered by the Verkhovna Rada.
