The pipeline is the main source of crude oil imports to Hungary. The revised sixth package of sanctions is set to be discussed on Sunday.
The EU has proposed to temporarily exclude the Druzhba oil pipeline from Russia’s draft embargo on oil imports. The lockdown could be postponed until June or December 2024. On Sunday, May 29, according to Bloomberg.
It was noted that the pipeline is the main source of crude oil imports to Hungary. That is why this country has blocked a new package of restrictions against the Russian Federation.
“The proposal will give Hungary, which opposes the deal, more time to find a technical solution that will meet its energy needs,” the sources said.
However, they added that the new draft embargo would also take into account “the concerns of other landlocked countries, including Slovakia and the Czech Republic”
Against this background, it was proposed to include in the draft embargo a restriction on the re-export of Russian oil to other member states or third countries.
EU ambassadors are scheduled to meet on Sunday 29 May to discuss the revised package.
Earlier, Ukraine warned Hungary about the Druzhba oil pipeline: “something could happen here.”
As you know, Hungary blocked the EU oil embargo against Russia. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, ruled out reaching a pan-European agreement on a ban on Russia’s oil imports at the EU Council summit next week.
