US President Joe Biden and his administration support the position that Ukraine will become a member of NATO after all.
US President Joe Biden and his team are talking to other NATO members about Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. This was reported by CNN.
It was noted that during the NATO summit in Vilnius, the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance will be one of several that will be raised by the leaders. In particular, it is planned to discuss new defense spending obligations and the appointment of a new NATO Secretary General to replace Jens Stoltenberg.
The publication writes that at previous meetings of the Alliance, the allies prepared a joint declaration, outlining common views. Failure to reach a consensus this year could have far-reaching consequences and could signal problems for the unity of NATO member nations.
So, some countries, especially in Eastern Europe, located near Ukraine and the Russian Federation, are in favor of a more specific way for our country to join NATO after the end of the war. Other members of the Alliance, especially in Western and Southern Europe, believe that the accelerated integration of Ukraine may be too provocative and dangerous, even in the event of a cessation of hostilities.
Biden and his administration reportedly support the position that Ukraine will become a member of NATO after all.
Whether the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky will be present at the summit in Vilnius depends on the results of the negotiations between the countries.
It will be recalled that the NATO Secretary General previously said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not happen while the war continues, but that the path to future membership is open.
NATO members intend to offer Ukraine an updated format of relations to show support for its application for membership, but there is no talk of concrete steps for entering the Ukraine in the Alliance in the near future.
