425 MEPs voted for this resolution within the framework of the plenary session of the European Parliament, 38 were against, 42 abstained, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
(European Parliament – ed.) Calls on NATO allies to fulfill their commitments to Ukraine’s membership in NATO and expects that the upcoming summit meetings in Vilnius and Washington will pave the way for inviting Ukraine to join NATO, and that the accession process will begin after the end of the war and will be finalized as soon as possible, the resolution says.
The European Parliament also called on EU member states, NATO allies and like-minded partners to work closely with Ukraine to develop “an interim framework for security guarantees to be implemented immediately after the war until full NATO membership is achieved.”
(The European Parliament – ed.) notes the fact that the integration of Ukraine into NATO and the EU will strengthen regional and global security, contribute to stability and strengthen the bonds of cooperation and common values between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community, the document says.
The resolution also touched upon the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.
MEPs condemn in the strongest terms Russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on June 6, which is a war crime and resulted in massive floods and environmental disaster, as well as ecocide in Ukraine. All those responsible for war crimes, including the destruction of the dam, will be held accountable in accordance with international law, the resolution states.
The resolution also raises the issue of restoring Ukraine. MEPs call on the EU to create a comprehensive package for Ukraine that takes into account urgent, medium and long-term needs.
The importance of combining the restoration of Ukraine, its European integration steps and other reforms is noted, and it is also noted that it is important to create better infrastructure during the restoration than was lost, taking into account the European Green Deal policy.
The European Parliament also expressed the hope that negotiations with Ukraine on joining the EU could begin this year.
