This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.
This event will be the beginning of the revival in the Ukrainian Lavra of the tradition of honoring outstanding figures of national history and culture. And in the Lavra churches, a prayer will be heard to God for Ukraine, for the defenders and defenders of our country and our people, the message says.
Recall that for his unwillingness to obey Muscovy, Mazepa, during his lifetime, was anathema by the Russian imperial church. The Moscow Patriarchate continued to “curse” Mazepa both under independent Ukraine and after the start of the war in 2014. Therefore, the event must restore historical and spiritual justice.
The divine service will be the beginning of the revival in the Ukrainian Lavra of the tradition of honoring outstanding figures of national history and culture.
Also, at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine and with the support of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine, the start of restoration work in the Church of All Saints will be announced, as well as a new project will be presented – the Museum Center “Hetman Ivan Mazepa and His Day” (location – Onufrievskaya Tower).
Mazepa and Lavra
Under the special care of Ivan Mazepa was precisely the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. He was one of the most respected citers of the Pechersk monastery.
Ivan Mazepa, at his own expense, erected stone defensive walls with four watchtowers around the Upper Territory of the Lavra, including the costs of two gate churches – the restoration of the Trinity Church above the main Lavra Gate and the construction of a new stone gate church of All Lavra Saints. The Mazepa family coat of arms was placed on the latter.
Generously endowing the Pechersk monastery, Mazepa ordered a large bell for the needs of the Lavra and allocated funds for the construction of a new stone bell tower.
It was during the reign of Mazepa that the domes were gilded, pediments and decorative ornaments were placed on the main Lavra cathedral church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Grandiose construction unfolded not only in the Lavra, but throughout Ukraine. And it was at this time that a special original type of buildings was created, the original architectural forms of which surprisingly emphasized the Ukrainian national style. This gave reason to modern scholars to call the art of that time – Ukrainian baroque, which is often called “Mazepa”.
In addition to building new or rebuilding old churches from princely times, the hetman made valuable gifts to the churches. Among them are icons, crosses, bowls, mitres, chasubles, bells, silver tombs for holy relics, liturgical books made of precious materials, set and decorated with gold, silver, precious stones, brocade, velvet and silk.
