Moldovan farmers are demanding a temporary restriction on wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower imports from Ukraine.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu told the Voice of Bessarabia TV channel that the country’s government does not intend to fulfill the protesters’ demands to ban the export of grain from Ukraine, as has been done in some EU countries.
“The farmers have some problems, I understand the context. But at the same time, we cannot close the country to Ukraine. They will protest, talk, hopefully, then they will find some solutions,” said Sandu .
News Maker reports that Moldovan farmers, dissatisfied with the actions of the government, came out on Wednesday to protest in different regions of the country, blocking the roads with columns of tractors, combining and other agricultural equipment.
The farmers demanded a temporary restriction on the import of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine, compensation for small and medium-sized grain producers in the amount of about $170 per hectare, payment of arrears in subsidies in the previous year and refund of value added tax for the purchase of fuel.
Remember, on May 2, the European Commission banned the import of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds of Ukrainian origin in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia for the period until June 5, 2023.
