Slovenia won a seat in the Eastern European group of the UN Security Council, as it beat its competitor by 115 votes.
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly elected new members to the Security Council. In particular, Slovenia won more votes in the Eastern European group than Belarus. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, June 7.
In the UN Security Council the seats were received:
-
from African countries – Algeria and Sierra Leone,
-
from the Pacific region – South Korea,
-
from Latin America – Guyana,
-
from Eastern Europe – Slovenia.
Slovenia got 153 votes and topped Belarus, which received 38 votes.
Since 2007, Belarus has been a possible candidate for a member of the Eastern European group for the 2024-2025 season. Slovenia took part in the race in December 2021 after the suppression of protests in Belarus by the Belarusian ruling regime.
The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions: imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It has five permanent members with veto power: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
To ensure geographical representation, seats are distributed among regional groups. In case the candidates have no rivals in their group, they still need to get the support of more than two-thirds of the General Assembly.
We will remind, the representative of Ukraine at the UN Serhiy Kyslitsa mocked that Russia called a meeting of the UN Security Council to complain about the fall of its missiles in Ukraine.
