The head of EU diplomacy called on Kosovo authorities to hold early elections as soon as possible in all four municipalities where protests have erupted.
The European Union has said it will take “drastic measures” if Kosovo authorities do not call early elections in municipalities in the country’s north. About this Saturday, June 3, expressed EU High Representative for External Affairs Josep Borrell.
He called on Kosovo and Serbia to “immediately and unconditionally” act to reduce the conflict and stop the “divisive” rhetoric. He also, on behalf of the EU, named the points that the Kosovo authorities must fulfill – otherwise they will face negative consequences:
-
suspend police operations in the area of municipal buildings. City leaders must temporarily perform their duties elsewhere;
-
hold early elections as soon as possible in all four municipalities where protests have erupted;
-
bring the Kosovo Serbs to the polls.
Borrell said Serbia and Kosovo were facing punitive measures over riots that broke out in late May in the predominantly Serb northern region of Kosovo. If regional tensions are not reduced, the EU will take “decisive measures” with “negative consequences.”
What such measures look like, the report does not say, however, as noted by the dpa agency, we can talk about reducing the financial assistance received by both countries as candidates for joining the European Union. In addition, the EU may reduce cooperation with them.
It will be remembered that at the end of May, as a result of clashes in the north of Kosovo, 30 KFOR peacekeepers were injured.
