The resolution developed by the US called for a reduction in the amount of oil that North Korea can legally import. The document also provided sanctions against the hacker group Lazarus, which is associated with the DPRK.
China and Russia on Thursday, May 26, at the UN Security Council vetoed the strengthening of sanctions against North Korea, initiated by the United States for testing Pyongyang’s ballistic missiles, AFP reports.
The resolution to tighten sanctions was supported by 13 other Security Council members, though some U.S. allies were surprised why Washington started the vote, knowing Beijing and Moscow’s relentless opposition.
So, China, the Chinese representative said he would prefer a non -binding document than a new resolution against Pyongyang.
The resolution developed by the US would reduce the amount of oil that North Korea can legally import annually for civilian use from four million to three million barrels. It will also reduce refined oil imports from 500,000 to 375,000 barrels. The new document will also blacklist the Lazarus hacker group, which the United States says is linked to North Korea.
According to Washington, North Korea has conducted six launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles this year and is actively preparing to conduct nuclear tests.
The UN General Assembly will now debate in North Korea over the next two weeks under a new rule that requires all members of the organization to meet whenever a veto is imposed on the Security Council by one of the five permanent members – Russia , China, US, France, or Great Britain.
On May 25, North Korea launched at least two ballistic missiles.
It was previously reported that North Korea was preparing for its first nuclear test in five years.
