Back in 2014, he advocated providing weapons to Ukraine and criticized then-US leader Barack Obama for doing the opposite.
DeSantis recently called the Russian invasion a “territorial dispute”, saying that protecting Ukraine is not a vital US interest and US policymakers should focus on their own state.
DeSantis’ announcement should coincide with the start of his Miami campaign fundraiser and end months of speculation among his supporters about whether he would be willing to run in the upcoming presidential election.
DeSantis is expected to position himself as a successful conservative politician with a good track record and without the scandalousness that is so characteristic of Trump. For some time, DeSantis was ahead of Trump in the polls and was considered a promising rival for Joe Biden. However, in recent weeks, his popularity among Republicans has noticeably dipped and he began to lag far behind Trump.
