This was announced on May 22 by the speaker of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Cherevaty
Our heroes continue to push the Russian occupiers out of the Ukrainian land.
He added that Russia continues its attempts to “completely occupy Bakhmut” and “want to seize the place where Ukrainian units are holding the line – the southwestern part of the city.”
On the eve of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine noted that the Ukrainian military took Bakhmut in the Donetsk region in a “semicircle”. Russia, on the other hand, insisted that the city seemed to have been completely captured.
Russia began shelling Bakhmut in May last year, since then stubborn battles there have almost never stopped. When the green city, where about 70 thousand people lived, turned into ruins.
The leader of the Wagner PPK Yevgeny Prigozhin on May 20, not for the first time, said that he had finally taken what was left of the city. Following the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin promised to reward those involved. However, President Zelensky replied that the city remains Ukrainian, and a representative of the Eastern Group of Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine told the BBC that Ukrainian forces still remain in Bakhmut and intend to defend it.
Feast victory
In recent days, a real storm has risen in the Russian media space, which allegedly concerns the victorious end of the battles for Bakhmut.
Russian TV channels talked about the “historical event” and compared the emotions from the capture of the city with “grandfathers in Berlin.” Putin officially congratulated the mercenaries and promised to present them as awards.
The Ukrainian side does not confirm the loss of Bakhmut. Today, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Anna Malyar wrote in her Telegram channel that the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintain some facilities and the private sector in the Samolet area in the south-west of the city, and are also fighting for the dominant heights north and south of Bakhmut.
At the same time, on May 21, a representative of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Cherevaty, said that he did not exclude the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian units from the city.
Leaving the city or its defense – this will be decided only taking into account the expediency and the preservation of their forces and means. There are different options, but this is only for the consideration of the command, which showed during the year of the war that it always makes the right decisions. Then it will allow to inflict even more damage on the enemy and, if necessary, to return these positions, he said.
Prigozhin has already stated that after the final occupation of the city, the Wagner PIK will not go further, but will go to the rear, transferring positions to regular Russian troops. The commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky, confirming the words of Maliar, said that the Ukrainians were advancing on the flanks of Russia’s positions in the suburbs of Bakhmut, and predicted a tactical encirclement of Russian troops in the city.
Thanks to this, we will be able to control all high-rise buildings occupied by the enemy, and gradually destroy them. This deprives the enemy of control over the approaches to the city and gives us certain tactical advantages,” Syrsky said.
