I now live in a situation where women prisoners can simply write to me, even threaten me, saying that your man is in a resort. It is not true. They are in a closed regime facility. We don’t even know where. They are not in a resort and not on the sea. They have a certain mode, regulated calls, schedule. They are not subjected to torture, as in Russia, but, nevertheless, they are not completely free. We all understand that if they had remained in captivity longer in those conditions, then inevitable processes would have occurred with their condition,” said Kateryna Prokopenko, founder of the Association of Azovstal Defenders’ Families, wife of a Radis fighter, in a conversation with Ukrinform.
Prokopenko assured that the fighters have access to information, they are aware of everything that is happening in Ukraine. At the same time, she said that the leaders of Azov refused to be visited by their relatives, calling it “male military solidarity” – they want to be morally on a par with their rank and file.
Ukrainians learned about Prokopenko during the heroic defense of Mariupol. Her husband, Hero of Ukraine Denis “Redis” Prokopenko, led the Mariupol garrison and, together with his brothers, firmly defended the Azovstal plant, after which he was captured, and from there he was interned in Turkey. Ekaterina, together with other families, created the Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders and did everything for the defenders to survive.
On May 20, in Kyiv, on the anniversary of the order to withdraw the military of the Mariupol garrison from Azovstal, a procession “We are waiting for the heroes of Mariupol to go home” took place.
