Three Russian scientists were charged with high treason. Russian publications reported that one of them was selling data to China.
Three Russian scientists from the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM), involved in the creation of hypersonic aircraft, were arrested by security forces. They now face life in prison for treason. This was reported on Wednesday, May 17, by The Moscow Times, citing an open letter from ITAM employees.
In it, they reported the arrest on suspicion of treason of Valery Zvegintsev, Doctor of Technical Sciences and chief researcher, who founded the high-velocity aerogasdynamics laboratory at the institute. In particular, since April 7 of this year, he has been under house arrest.
In addition, ITAM director Alexander Shiplyuk was placed in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in August of last year a few days after the arrest of Anatoly Maslov, the chief researcher of the institute. They are also suspected of treason.
The media reported that Maslov was suspected of transferring data related to hypersonic technologies to China.
In total, 16 people were prosecuted in the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including the ex-head, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Aseev.
