The presentation took place today, May 14, in the German city of Aachen, where Zelensky arrived during his visit to Germany. Deutsche Welle reports.
At the award ceremony, in addition to Zelensky, were:
- the mayor of Aachen, Sibila Coypen;
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz;
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen;
- Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki.
Yes, Scholz noted that this award is presented for the first time to the president and the whole nation.
I think this is a reasonable decision. Because the Ukrainian people and the president have achieved a lot since February 24, 22. Impossible. And with great courage your country is defending itself against the total Russian aggression of unprecedented force, repelling Russian attackers day after day. The Russian war brought the European peoples closer, he stressed.
Scholz also assured that Ukraine has the full support of Germany on its way to the European Union.
The Charlemagne Prize has been awarded annually since 1950 for contributions to the unification of Europe to those who “have made a significant contribution to the realization of the ideals under which the Prize is founded”.
The award is named in honor of Charlemagne, the king of the Franks, who for the first time after the fall of the Roman Empire united most of Western and Central Europe and was crowned in Rome in 800 as “Emperor of the West”. The capital of his country was Aachen, where he is buried.
