Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny recalled what brought him to tears since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
First of all, I am a normal person with an absolutely normal heart, and the fact that the emotions on my face and my behavior do not betray human pain does not mean anything. The heart feels this very painful. I am human. Once I cried, – said the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in an interview with Dmitry Komarov, “Year. Behind the scenes”.
Zaluzhny said that it was hard for him to erase the numbers of dead acquaintances and comrades from the phone’s memory.
Nothing can be done about these records. Perhaps I’m not ready for this yet. Someday I will probably do this to permanently delete this person from my phone, but it will not be possible to delete him from memory.
When asked if he had to cry, Zalugny replied:
As Commander-in-Chief, I don’t want to admit any shortcomings, but I am human. Once I cried when my mother was looking for her son. He was a helicopter pilot, flew to Mariupol. Even at the moment when I corresponded with her, I had hope that he was still alive and everything would be fine. And at one point they told me that he had died, he was no more.
Zaluzhny noted that when he had to talk with his mother about the death of a fighter, he “did not have enough strength.”
He refused to give the name of the defender and noted that all the dead soldiers deserve respect and recognition.
The Commander-in-Chief added that he was experiencing Ukrainian losses very hard.
Zaluzhny believes that the strategic goal of the Russian Federation at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine was the destruction of Ukrainian statehood:
They expected that they would come in organized columns, people would meet them with bread and salt, and that was it. Ukrainian state. But the Ukrainians began to resist, the Ukrainians began to defend themselves. While they are coming here from the Russian Federation to deliberately kill Ukrainians. The essence of this war is that if we do not destroy this enemy now, we will be destroyed, because they came deliberately, said the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
He also stressed that the Russians are going to kill the Ukrainians, despite the fact that they are suffering “insane” losses on the battlefield in Ukraine.
Zaluzhny also noted that the losses suffered by Russian infidels would stop any country, but, perhaps, human life in Russia is worth nothing.
They act like a horde. Even based on what we see from their losses, just look at what is left on the battlefield. Such losses would stop any country from taking further action. Any country would be stopped. 15 thousand losses in Afghanistan actually brought the Soviet Union to its knees. Now the number of losses of the Russian Federation is much greater. And she doesn’t stop them. There is only one conclusion: the cheapest thing in this country is human life. This is the cheapest. We, on the contrary, have the most precious thing.”
Zaluzhny believes that Ukraine has a difficult and long road to victory.
He added that now Ukraine is being held by people. He calls the Ukrainian people a phenomenon and believes that the state rests only on them.
The Commander-in-Chief acknowledged that Ukraine had lost many professional military men: “At this moment, we lost a lot of people, career commanders. Because military personnel start the war, and teachers, engineers, accounting – this is what happens. ”
Zaluzhny noted that the basis of victory will be not only the heroism of Ukrainians, but also the use of advanced technologies, more efficient equipment: “But so far everything rests on the shoulders of ordinary people. All the victories that were, they were won by the lives of our Ukrainians, who laid down their lives, liberating Kherson, liberating the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kyiv and Kiev regions.”
