The Deputy Prime Minister believes that a more effective option is to accommodate internally displaced persons in well-equipped dormitories.
Building modular settlements for IDPs is less effective than housing internally displaced people in compact settlement areas. Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Irina Vereshchuk said this on Tuesday, May 2, at the conference The Right to Dignity in Places of Compact Settlement, Ukrinform reports.
“We saw that the modular towns (now we have 25 of them, where there are about 5 thousand people, and the process of organizing new towns is still underway) did not work. I don’t think that this is an effective form and it may be in the future,” said Vereshchuk.
As an example, he mentioned a modular town on the outskirts of Kharkiv, which was built in 2015-2016 with money provided by the German government. Hundreds of displaced people have settled there, but even seven years later, according to the official, people are living in terrible conditions.
“The form of modular towns, in my opinion, has not shown itself and has not proven itself, although it may be a topic for discussion,” said Vereshchuk.
At the same time, the PCR format (compact settlement areas – ed.) – in his opinion, is an effective way of life for people.
