Traces of an ancient Caspian-like sea were found by a team of geologists in the Dnipropetrovsk region. An outstanding Ukrainian geologist, popularizer of science and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Geology, Geography and Geoecology Volodymyr Manyuk spoke about amazing finds in Shchurovskaya Balka near the city of Dnipro.

According to scientists, the ancient sea was part of a chain of similar reservoirs associated with the open sea. Manyuk pointed out that the sea in this area was tens of millions of years ago. He also outlined the extraordinary geological structure of the area.
Shchurovskaya gully… Small, very old quarries on the right slope of the gully reveal the sands of the Novopetrovskaya suite of the Miocene division of the Neogene system (23.8 Ma). Sands were deposited in large lake-seas such as the Caspian Sea and periodically had a connection with the open sea. Over time, conditions favorable for the lithification of silica-rich sediments arose in the already established sand strata, and in some areas of the distribution of these sands, red, ocher-brown red sandstones in the form of lenses were formed rich in iron, compacted to varying degrees (in places to quartzite-like sandstones and quartzites). and giant boulders. Similar gigantic concretions can be seen near the village of Taromsky, in the valley of the Samotkan River, in the village of Slavyanka on the Byk River, and not only, – Manyuk pointed out.
The first mention of them came to us from the outstanding researcher of geology Valerian Domger, who explored this area in 1883.
