China’s birth rate has recently plummeted, and its population began to decline last year for the first time since 1961. Demographers attribute this to the one-child policy, which existed in the country for 35 years and stopped seven years ago, as well as the high cost of child support, the BBC Russian Service reports.
In India, the average number of births per woman is also falling from year to year.
At the same time, the data on the population of India in the report are estimates, since the last population census was conducted in the country back in 2011.
In November 2022, the global population reached 8 billion people. However, experts note that its growth has slowed down and is now at its lowest point since 1950. In both India and China, the birth rate is falling.
In China, the population is declining despite the fact that in 2016 the authorities abolished the one-child policy and introduced several initiatives aimed at convincing young families to have two or more children.
Other factors negatively impacting China’s birth rate include an overall rise in the cost of living in the country and the fact that more women are entering the workforce.
India’s birth rate has also dropped significantly in recent decades, data show, from an average of 5.7 births per woman in 1950 to 2.2 now.
At the same time, population growth remains at the level of 1.2% per year, which is about a quarter lower than last year’s decade.
