Court in China province Guizhou sentenced eleven people to up to four years in prison for damaging a 2,600-year-old tree that is protected and considered sacred to the people of the area where it grows.
Characteristics
This is a nanmu tree, a species found only in parts of Asia, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Warring States period (722 BC – 479) two meters in its central part, The Paper reports today.
tree damage
In early February 2022, the people of Nanshao discovered that a section at the base of the trunk had been cut away, severely damaging the tree, which they call “Old King Nambu”.
The subsequent criminal investigation found that between September and December 2021, the defendants cut down up to 200 pieces of this and other nanmu trees for sale, making a profit of 414,700 yuan ($60,287; €54,972).
In addition to severely damaging the thousand-year-old Nanshao specimen, the already condemned have caused the death of seven more trees, and along with their prison sentence, they will have to pay for the restoration of the “Old King of Nambu”.
Tree protection laws
China is stepping up its efforts to plant and conserve trees across the country as part of efforts to meet its commitment to reduce peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
Arbor Day was established in 1981, in which millions of people participate each year and through which he aims to create “great green walls” in cities like Beijing on the outskirts that stop sand and other polluting particles.
