The new species belongs to the Tripedaliidae family, and although it is common in tropical and subtropical waters, it is the first time it has been recorded in China’s coastal waters, HKBU said in a statement on Tuesday.

Characteristics

Scientists have named a new varietyTripedalia Maipoensis’ to reflect the type and location where it was discovered for three consecutive years, from 2020 to 2022, in the mangroves of the tidal shrimp ponds of a nature reserve located on the east bank of the mouth of the Pearl River, known locally as ‘ Gay wai .

The box jellyfish, named after its cubic body, belongs to the cnidarian phylum.

Although they are one of the smallest subgroups of cnidarians, they contain some of the most poisonous marine animals known from tropical waters.

Thus, this creature with a transparent and colorless body is an average length of 1.5 centimeters, and it has three tentacles up to 10 centimeters long at each of its four corners, the University of Hong Kong said.

Thanks to the pedal, a flat pedal structure located at the base of each tentacle and similar to a boat’s oar, these animals are very fast, as they can produce strong impulses when they contract their bodies.

Like other jelly boxes, Tripedalia Maipoensis he has 24 eyes. They are evenly divided into four groups, each of which is located inside a sensory depression called a “ropalia” on each side of the bell.

The researchers believe that two of these groups have lenses that allow them to form images, while the other four can only perceive light.

The project was led by Professor Qiu Jianwen, Professor in the Department of Biology at HKBU, with collaborators from WWF-Hong Kong, Ocean Park Hong Kong and the University of Manchester.
