Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu congratulated himself on his “strong” ties with Moscow on Sunday during a Kremlin meeting with the Russian president. Vladimir Putin.
“We have very strong ties that go beyond Cold War-era military-political alliances,” and “very stable,” he said in a speech broadcast on Russian television.
The minister added that the relationship between Russia And China “entered a new era.”
“This is my first foreign visit since I took over as Chinese defense minister. I specifically chose Russia to highlight the special nature and strategic importance of our bilateral relationship,” Li Shangfu added.
“Strategic” relationships
At a meeting attended by his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, Putin hailed military cooperation between Russia And China.
“We are also actively working through the military departments, regularly exchanging useful information, working together on military-technical cooperation, conducting joint exercises,” Putin said.
“This is, without a doubt, another important area that strengthens the “strategic” nature of relations between Moscow and Beijing,” the Russian president added.
Li’s trip to Russia, which will last until April 19, follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Moscow last month.
During two days of face-to-face talks, Putin and Xi congratulated each other on the opening of a “new era” in their bilateral relationship and discussed China’s proposal to withdraw from the Ukraine conflict.
China, which has not condemned the Russian military operation in Ukraine, defines itself in the dispute as neutral and claims to be a mediator. Washington has accused Beijing of considering supplying arms to its Russian ally, which China denies.
Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their cooperation in recent years, with a shared desire to balance America’s global influence. Their rapprochement deepened after Putin launched an offensive into Ukraine in February 2022.
