Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has organized the process of exchange and treatment of prisoners of war in full compliance with the norms of international law.

Since the start of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, 2,235 prisoners of war have been returned. This was announced on Sunday, April 16, by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense Anna Malyar on Telegram.

Malyar said that Ukraine has organized the process of exchange and treatment of prisoners of war in full compliance with international law.

“This process has been completely official and open, as much as security allows,” he said.

Malyar emphasized that for this, in the spring of 2022, all necessary laws, resolutions, decrees are immediately adopted and a new effective civilized state mechanism for the exchange and treatment of prisoners of war is launched. And on March 11, 2022, a coordination headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war was created under the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, which coordinates the activities of more than ten state institutions involved on the exchange and treatment of prisoners of war. .

He also pointed out that the detention of prisoners in Ukraine is regulated by the Geneva Convention.

At the same time, he pointed out that information about the exchange of prisoners remains closed until the last moment, so that its leaks do not harm the exchange.

Earlier this week, Ukraine returned 100 people from captivity. So, in just seven days, 230 defenders of the motherland returned home.

Russia has also reportedly refused to exchange captured Muslims in honor of the start of Ramadan.
