The United States on Thursday urged China to choose diplomacy over military pressure on Taiwan after Beijing deployed warships following a meeting between the island’s president and the head of the US House of Representatives.
“We continue to call Beijing stop military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan instead, engage in constructive diplomacy,” the State Department spokesman said. Vedant Patel.
“We remain committed to keeping communication channels open to avoid the risk of any miscalculation,” Patel said.
US diplomat acknowledged “differences” between his country and China O Taiwanbut said that the two powers have been coping with the situation for 40 years.
Tsai Ing-wen meets Kevin McCarthy
The president Tsai Ingwen met on Wednesday in California with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a Republican Kevin McCarthywho became the highest-ranking American to host the President of Taiwan in USA since Washington switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
Chinawho warned against a visit, stationed warships in the waters around Taiwanalthough the initial reaction was less than when McCarthy’s predecessor, a Democrat Nancy Pelosivisited Taipei in August.
USA described Tsai’s visit as a “transit” on her journey to and from Central America.
“There is no reason to turn this transit, which is in line with long-standing US policy, into something that it is not, or an excuse for an overreaction,” Patel said.
