IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, after his second visit to the Zaporozhye NPP during the occupation, declared the need to protect it.
A significant increase in the number of troops is recorded in the Zaporozhye region, the head of the IAEA said after a visit to the station on March 29.
A significant increase in the number of troops is recorded in the Zaporozhye region. We often talk about offensive and counter-offensive. I am, of course, focused on nuclear safety. And as you know, I have worked with management in Kyiv and Moscow to determine measures to protect the station. There were different ideas and different concepts that were being worked on. At first, we focused on the possibility of creating a well-defined zone around the station … We will not build a fortress here. The idea is to agree on certain principles, certain obligations, in particular not to attack the station. This is a nuclear power plant. This is not a military base,” said the head of the IAEA.
Grossi said that at first, to protect the nuclear power plant, the IAEA considered the possibility of creating a certain zone around the plant, but now they are focusing on “agreeing on obligations, including not attacking the plant.”
Recall that the Muscovites occupied the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in March 2022. After lengthy negotiations, it was possible to agree with the invaders on the start of the work of the IAEA mission at the ZNPP.
After the decision of the Russian parliament on the so-called “accession” of the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine to Russia in October 2022, Puylo signed a “decree” on “accepting the ZNPP nuclear facilities into federal ownership.”
