Ukraine has set a date for its counter-offensive for Wednesday, early spring, after the arrival of the first batch of German and British tanks this week, while Russian forces appear to have seized the initiative in the Donbas.
“It depends on the weather conditions. In spring, the ground is very wet. Only tracked vehicles can be used. I think we will see (counteroffensive) in April-May,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told the media. .
Just a few days ago the president UkraineVolodymyr Zelensky assured that a counteroffensive would be impossible until Kyiv received the necessary weapons and ammunition so as not to send soldiers to certain death.
Frontal counteroffensive
Reznikov explained that the General Staff Ukraine wait for the “right moment” and the fact that the counterattack will take place on various sectors of the front, without specifying.
“I am sure that we will continue to liberate the occupied territories, as we have already done in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkov and Kherson,” he said.
The minister who predicted “very positive changes for Ukraine“This year, he boarded one of the German-supplied Marder armored vehicles today, which also shipped the first batch of 18 Leopard-2s on Monday.

On Tuesday, it was the turn of the British Challengers, and today, Wednesday, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced that Madrid would send six Leopards to Kiev after they were repaired.
As for European promises of a million shells, Reznikov acknowledged that the Ukrainian army needs more ammunition if it wants to retake territories, though he specified that Kiev spends between 4,000 and 7,000 shells a day, while Moscow spends about 20,000.
Wagner impulse
Meanwhile, at the front, after a couple of weeks of stagnation, the mercenaries of the Wagner group seem to have again stepped up their assault operations on the Bakhmut stronghold in the Donetsk region.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (IIW), the Wagners may have taken over the AZOM iron and steel plant, whose tunnels served as a trench for Ukrainian soldiers for nine months, thus controlling 65% of the city, and they will now be devoting themselves to clearing the area of enemies.
If Russian military bloggers even talk about seizing the market and positions at the Palace of Culture in the city center, then the official media specify that the fighting has now moved to the industrial zones south of AZOM.
Be that as it may, Zelensky refuses to surrender the city, which has become a symbol of resistance to the occupation.

Speaking to the American press today, he said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin felt for a moment that Kyiv was weak, he would attack with all his might.
In the same vein, Reznikov assured that the Ukrainian defenders were “lowering Russia’s offensive potential”, which helps the Ukrainian forces “stabilize the front line and buy time to prepare a counter-offensive.”
High cost for both parties
Wagner’s chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, acknowledged today the high cost of fierce fighting in human lives.
“The battle for Bakhmut practically destroyed the Ukrainian army and, unfortunately, badly battered the Wagnerites,” the press service quoted him as saying.
Reznikov replied: “They are tired too. They suffered heavy losses, many killed and wounded. They usually lose at least five hundred soldiers a day.”
The Ukrainian army now faces a dilemma of what to do with the city of Avdiivka on the outskirts of Donetsk, where Russian troops are also trying to encircle the city.

According to ISW, the loss of Avdiivka would be an even bigger setback than the defeat in the Battle of Bakhmut, as it would clear the way for Russian troops into the center of Donetsk.
Grossi in Zaporozhye
In turn, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi today inspected the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye, which has been under Russian control for a year now.
He acknowledged that the creation of a security zone is no longer on the agenda. “We are developing the concept of local protection of the plant,” he told reporters.
The situation of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant “is not improving, but on the contrary, the fighting around the site is intensifying,” he stressed.
Grossi assured that he was trying to “propose realistic measures that can be taken by all parties.”
