Peruwith 31 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) and Bolivian (27 µg/m3) top the list of countries in South America with worse air qualityexceeding the recommendations of the World Health Organization by more than 5 times (WHO), according to a study presented yesterday, Tuesday.
The 2022 Lancet Countdown South America report on health and the climate crisis lists air pollution as a major risk factor for environmental degradation. Wednesday.
The researchers highlighted the “disproportionate” damage that the climate emergency is doing to the health of the region’s most vulnerable populations, who produce the least greenhouse gases and have the worst access to healthcare systems.
The study blamed air pollution premature death of about 37,000 South Americans in 2020, up a thousand more than in 2015, due to its direct association with the risk of heart attacks, respiratory disease and cancer, among other pathologies.
According to the Lancet Countdown South America, the countries with the highest death rates due to air pollution (PM2.5) are Chile and Peru, with 230 and 176 deaths per million inhabitants.
heat waves
Among other issues the researchers have been tackling are the increase in heat waves and how they have increased the number of deaths among people over 65 since 2000, especially in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela.
Climate suitability for the presence of mosquitoes has improved in all countries of the continent, with the exception of Argentina And Surinametherefore, the researchers explain the 35.3% increase in the prevalence of dengue fever in South America.
Each country, always according to the report, faces different climate challenges. Peru faces water shortages and extreme temperatures; Chile and Colombia to wildfires, and Brazil and Argentina to extreme precipitation and its consequences. (EFE)
