US House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill instructing the Secretary of State to look for ways to eliminate the category of “developing countries”, which China conducts in international organizations.
The law, calledChina it is not a developing country,” was approved with the support of 415 congressmen and not a single vote against.
The lawmakers are suggesting that the US seek a mechanism to change China’s status to “upper-middle-income country, high-income country, or developed country in every international organization of which the US is a member.”
He also urges the head of US diplomacy to ensure that Beijing does not receive any preferential treatment as a result of flaunting the label of a developing country.
Competition from China
Organizations like the UN believe China is on the rise despite being the world’s second largest economy, reports The Hill.
The proposal is the latest example of US lawmakers’ increasingly aggressive rhetoric toward China, especially since the November midterm elections in which Republicans took control of the House of Representatives.
Shortly after the start of the new legislature, in January, the House of Representatives approved the creation of a bipartisan committee to study China’s technological, economic and security progress and propose legislative initiatives in this regard to improve competition with the Asian giant.
In addition, Washington recently banned the Chinese company ByteDance’s TikTok social network from government devices, a decision Beijing called “abuse.”
