American historian Timothy Snyder met with military Alexander Shirshin. A photo of Alexander reading Snyder’s book in a trench has gone viral on social media.
The historian then also caught the military man and signed “The highest honor for the author is the reader.”
Shirshin is a graduate of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). He has been defending Ukraine at the front since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Today Oleksandr met Timothy Snyder in Lvov at the UCU. Sasha said that he does not consider this tweet popular.
I was very surprised that Timothy Snyder reposted my photo and that it began to gain resonance. It’s just a photo, nothing amazing. A week will pass and everyone will forget. And the book is really interesting, – the UCU press service quotes Shirshin.
Snyder gave a lecture at UCU.
One of the EU narratives about Russia’s war in Ukraine is not about defeat, but about peace. We all want peace. But the question is, how can we achieve it? Peace is not the same as surrender. Sometimes peace means the defeat of one side and the victory of the other. Ukraine has ensured the security of life in Europe. For in fact, it kept the entire war on its territory. Perhaps it is Ukrainian resilience that will be a prerequisite for a peaceful world. I think that you sometimes do not fully realize how amazing you are with your self-sacrifice in this struggle for freedom and democracy, the Yale professor said.
He greeted the meeting participants in Ukrainian, and also answered several questions in Ukrainian. On the eve of the meeting, Ukrainian professor Yaroslav Hrytsak collected questions for the historian from the military from the UCU community, who now serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and are at the front.
