The Monticello station will be disconnected from the power plant and closed for long-term repairs.
On March 22, a new leak of radioactive water occurred at the Monticello nuclear power plant in the US state of Minnesota. The station is closed for renovation. This was announced by the energy company Xcel Energy, which manages the nuclear power plant.
A new leak spilled several hundred liters of radioactive water. The company assured that the emergency does not pose a risk to human health or the environment.
“Although the leak still does not pose a risk to the public or the environment, we have decided that the best course of action is to shut down the power plant and undertake immediate long-term repairs,” the statement said.
It was noted that specialists will start disconnecting the nuclear power plant from the network from today, March 24.
It will be remembered that more than 1.5 million liters of water with tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, leaked at the Monticello nuclear power plant in November 2022, but the information was made public only on March 16.
Xcel Energy said the leaks were contained and no radioactive water entered the drinking water supply.
