A group of US Republican senators sent a letter to US President Joe Biden asking him to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions.
We appeal to you to immediately provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with cluster munitions such as Advanced Dual-Purpose Conventional Munitions (DPICM), the letter says. – The consequences of the refusal to provide DPICM and other means of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are today on the battlefield in Bakhmut and other places.
The BBC writes that the Republicans consider the provision of ammunition, combined with other military support, to be a significant help to the Ukrainians. In this case, it will be easier for them to prolong the expulsion of Russian troops from the country’s territory.
Granting DPICM will allow Ukraine to offset Russia’s quantitative advantage in both manpower and artillery shells, and also allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to concentrate the use of unitary warheads against more valuable Russian targets, they write.
The use of cluster munitions is prohibited in many countries of the world that have signed the relevant convention. Russia, Ukraine and the United States did not join it.
Last August, the UN reported hundreds of cluster munition attacks by Russian troops, as well as several cases of their use by the Ukrainian military.
The use of cluster munitions during the war in Ukraine is a flagrant disregard for human life and humanitarian principles.
It should be noted that the Russians in Ukraine have been using cluster munitions since the beginning of the invasion on February 24, 2022.
Cluster bombs are means of destruction containing from two to several hundred of the same type of combat elements, scattering at a given height. They are sprayed over a certain area and provide a larger area of destruction compared to monoblock ammunition.
In 2008, an international conference in Dublin reached an agreement to ban the use of cluster bombs.
