Russian dictator Vladimir Putin called an “escalation” the statement of the British Ministry of Defense about the supply of armor-piercing tank shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine and threatened to “respond” to this.
Putin stated this during a joint press briefing with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This is reported by the Russian media.
Putin said that Russia “will be forced to react as the collective West begins to use weapons with a nuclear component.”
It should be noted that depleted uranium ammunition has nothing to do with nuclear weapons.
Depleted uranium is formed as a by-product of the isolation of the active isotope U-235, which is important for nuclear energy and weapons, from the total mass of the mined metal, and almost entirely consists of the isotope U-238 (which has a half-life of 4.5 billion years), so it is even less radioactive, than a uranium redhead.
Depleted uranium is used in armor-piercing shells because of its high mass density, which provides a high armor-piercing effect – 19 thousand 50 kg / m³ (which is 67% more than the density of lead and only 16% less than the density of osmium and iridium, heavy elements of the periodic table ).
Shells with depleted uranium will be handed over to Ukraine.
