Because of Budapest’s position, Borrell issued a statement on his own behalf, “remembering” the decision of the International Criminal Court.
Hungary has blocked a joint application by EU member states for an international arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Monday, 20 mat, reports Bloomberg, citing its own sources.
It was noted that Budapest’s veto meant that the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, instead issued a statement on his own behalf, “taking note” of the decision of the International Criminal Court.
“The EU sees the ICC decision as the beginning of a process to hold Russia’s leaders accountable for the crimes and atrocities they ordered, permitted or committed in Ukraine,” Borrell said in a statement.
The next day, EU justice ministers issued their own statement supporting the ICC decision, which Hungary did not sign.
The publication notes that Budapest’s position is likely to be announced when EU leaders meet at a summit in Brussels this week.
On March 17, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Ombudsman Maria Alekseevna Lvova-Belova. They are suspected of involvement in the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.
And on March 20, the Ministers of Justice of various countries of the world met in London to discuss support for an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
