The voluntary reduction of gas consumption by 15% is valid in the European Union until March 31. It is planned to be extended by 12 months.
The European Commission has proposed to EU member states to extend for another year measures to reduce gas consumption. This was announced on March 20 by the press service of the department.
It has already been mentioned that in the context of the situation in the gas market, it is important that Europe is preparing for the next winter now.
“A concerted effort to reduce gas consumption is essential to get us through this winter. We have made significant progress in diversifying supplies and reducing our dependence on Russia, but the global gas market is expected to remain tight in the coming months. Continued savings will ensure preparations for next winter and make it easier for us to reach the goal of storing 90% of gas by November 1, ” said the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
According to the EC proposal, the voluntary target of 15% reduction in gas consumption, valid from August 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, will be maintained until March 31, 2024.
In addition, Member States must report the savings achieved on a monthly basis, instead of every two months as before.
The proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council, after which it can enter into force.
It will be remembered that in the summer of 2022, EU countries agreed to reduce gas consumption as part of the fight against the energy crisis.
The European Union will form a cartel for gas purchases
