The ships are in poor condition and pose a threat to maritime security and the region’s environment.
Unidentified tankers are delivering oil in the Gulf of Finland after the G7 imposed a price ceiling on Russian oil and the EU and UK imposed a ban on maritime imports of Russian crude oil. This was reported on March 20 by Euractiv.
It was noted that these restrictions forced Moscow to increase long-distance transportation using suspicious vessels.
“The arrival of hundreds of tankers in poor condition in the overloaded Gulf of Finland has increased risks to safety at sea and the environment. In the event of an accident and an oil spill, countries such as Finland and Estonia may face the consequences, because the authorities do not know if the “ghost tankers” are suitable,” the article said.
Gulf of Finland Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Tuomas Luukkonen said some of these vessels have crews who may not have sailed in the area before, posing a risk of accidents.
In addition, in the past six months, a large number of shipping companies have appeared ship oil from Russian ports, where there is almost no information in the EU.
Earlier it was reported that Estonia petitioned for a new package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation, aimed at reducing revenues through energy supplies.
In particular, Tallinn proposes to reduce Russia’s ability to export crude oil by sea.
