The visit is focused on expanding cooperation between the parties in the development and production of computer chips, green energy and batteries.
German Education and Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger will pay a two-day visit to Taiwan next week. It will be the first trip by a German federal government minister to the island in 26 years, Bloomberg reported, citing a spokesman for the German Ministry of Education.
It was noted that the visit provides for the expansion of cooperation between the parties in the development and production of computer chips, green energy and batteries.
The Stark-Watzinger trip comes amid discussions among members of Olaf Scholz’s cabinet about how Berlin should position itself in light of China’s increasingly tough stance on Taiwan.
According to Scholz’s spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, Germany continues to follow the “one China” policy and maintains Berlin’s “regular and close contact” with the Chinese leadership.
“The fact that the education minister is visiting Taiwan in no way calls into question our policy,” he said.
It was previously reported that members of the German Bundestag were planning to visit Taiwan.
It can be recalled that Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called “national reunification” with Taiwan among the country’s policy priorities.
