The Minsk City Court sentenced the former editor-in-chief of the largest Belarusian independent portal TUT.BY, Marina Zolotova, and the former director general of this media, Lyudmila Chekina, to 12 years in a penal colony. This was reported by the human rights center Viasna.
The women were reportedly handcuffed during the trial. The closed session test lasted over two months, totaling 37 sessions.
Chekina was charged with “evading the payment of taxes and fees on a particularly large scale” and “calling for actions aimed at causing harm to the national security of Belarus.” Zolotova added here an article about “inciting hatred.”
On Thursday, March 16, Belarusian TV showed an “investigation” about the work of TUT.BY. The propagandist Ksenia Lebedeva promised to say what the employees of the portal are to blame: in fact, they were accused of covering the events in Ukraine during the Maidan in 2013-2014, in 2010 they wrote about the protests after the elections in Belarus, about devaluations in the country and repressions against participants of peaceful protests in Belarus in 2020.
