More than half of the citizens of Ukraine expressed a desire to improve their level of knowledge of a foreign language.
Almost two-thirds of Ukrainians – 68% – say they have some knowledge of at least one foreign language. However, in general, this knowledge is not deep. This is confirmed by the results of an all-Ukrainian sociological survey conducted in December 2022 – January 2023 by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) at the request of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
Specifically, 51% of respondents said they have some knowledge of the English language. At the same time, 23% can read, write and communicate with it at a household or professional level.
Similar self-knowledge assessments for other foreign languages are:
-
for Polish – 22% -10%,
-
German – 14% -5%,
-
French – 7% -2%,
-
Spanish – 3% -1%,
-
Hungarian 2%-0%,
-
Turkish – 1% -1%.
At the same time, 32% of adult residents of Ukraine do not speak foreign languages at any level.
In addition, 56% of respondents expressed a desire to improve their level of knowledge of a foreign language, but 61% say that they do not need knowledge of a foreign language for their professional activities.
KIIS added that the survey did not take into account the Russian language – only English, Polish, Turkish, Hungarian, Spanish, French and German.
Study results in the past six months, 61% of respondents have experience using English in daily life, which is mainly related to leisure and communication with friends. 19% used English in their professional activities, 18% used it in education.
Survey data show that 51% of Ukrainian children study English in educational institutions, another 27% study it outside of educational institutions, and 22% do not study of English.
In addition, 93% of Ukrainians with children want their child to study and improve the level of English. If it is necessary to choose a foreign language that a resident of Ukraine should learn, the majority of study participants (89%) call English.
The survey was conducted through online interviews with 2,001 residents of Ukraine aged 18 and over from government-controlled territories on key demographic characteristics.
Under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and without taking into account the effect of the design and features of the research method used) will not exceed 2.2%. However, under conditions of war there may be additional sampling biases. However, the results remain highly representative.
As we have already written, the share of citizens using the Ukrainian language in everyday life increased by 7% in 2022 compared to 2021.
In addition, during a full-scale war with the Russian Federation, 33% of Kyivans switched to the Ukrainian language.
