The Russian Federation is trying to legitimize its attempt at annexation by passing a law that “simplifies the withdrawal from Ukrainian citizenship.”
Russia passed a law that allowed for the “termination” of Ukrainian citizenship for Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories. Thus, the Kremlin is trying to legitimize its annexation attempt, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On March 14, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a law according to which citizens of Ukraine who received Russian passports in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine can renounce Ukrainian citizenship after submitting the corresponding application to the Russian authorities.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russia is trying to legitimize the attempt to annex the occupied Ukrainian territories and the illegal passports of their inhabitants. The law of the Russian Federation violates the law of Ukraine and the norms of international law.
“The annulment of the bill has no legal consequences, and Ukrainians living in the temporarily occupied territories will retain Ukrainian citizenship, despite the Russian law,” the department said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the procedure for the termination of Ukrainian citizenship is regulated by the current law, in relation to which all holders of Ukrainian passports who have not gone through the appropriate exit procedure will remain citizens of Ukraine and can rely on protection under the Constitution and laws.
Diplomats called on the international community to condemn another Russian crime and increase military aid to Ukraine for the quick liberation of the temporarily occupied territories.
It was previously reported that the Russian occupiers in the Donbas are trying to force the population to give up the so-called “L/DPR passport” in favor of Russian citizenship.
