So far, the deputies of the Swiss Parliament have submitted five proposals regarding the organization of the procedure for the re-export of Swiss weapons and ammunition.
The lower house of the Swiss Parliament (National Council) decided that permission to provide weapons to a belligerent country is possible only if the UN Security Council condemns an aggressive war against it. This was reported on Thursday, March 9, on the website of the Swiss Parliament.
“The Federal Council (Government of Switzerland – ed.) must, in exceptional cases, allow the re-export of Swiss-made weapons if the UN Security Council has condemned a war of aggression,” the statement said .
In practice, the UN Security Council cannot condemn the aggression against Ukraine, because Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will block the adoption of any resolution that would condemn the war it unleashed against Ukraine.
However, the vote of the National Council does not mean the end of the discussion on the export of Swiss-made weapons. It is known that at least four other proposals are under consideration in the country’s parliament regarding the formats in which Switzerland, while remaining neutral, can allow the export and re-export of military-industrial complexes which is its product even in countries involved in armed conflict.
Among other things, an exception is discussed in the framework of “Lex Ukraine”. The Security Policy Committee of the Council of Cantons is proposing to allow the government to limit the validity of non-re-export declarations to five years under certain conditions.
Remember, the Council of Cantons – the upper house of the Swiss Parliament, after many hours of debate, rejected the petition, which provided for the provision of Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine.
Earlier, the media wrote that Switzerland is considering helping Ukraine with Leopard tanks.
