Russia has violated the basic principles of international security by attacking neighboring countries, the Secretary of the General Alliance said.
The old relations of Western countries with Russia are not possible even after the war in Ukraine. This is what NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at the Nordic SAMAK summit in Helsinki on Tuesday, February 28.
“At the end of the Cold War, many in this room believe that we can build a better relationship with Russia, including myself. And I still believe that the right decision is to seize the historic moment to build better security in Europe with Russia But President Putin chose to avoid cooperation and dialogue,” Stoltenberg said.
According to him, Russia is destroying the basic principles of international security by attacking neighboring countries and trying to “undermine our democracy.”
As an example, Stoltenberg cited Putin’s decision to suspend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), the provisions of which he has violated over the past few years.
“Therefore, we must recognize that the end of this war (in Ukraine – ed.) will not be a return to normal relations with Russia. There will be no return,” concluded the Alliance Secretary General.
Earlier, Stolteberg warned that Putin was preparing for a bigger war. Russia has launched new offensives in Ukraine, mobilized more troops and reached out to North Korea and Iran.
Recall that last week Vladimir Putin called Ukraine “enslaved” by the West, and also threatened to expand the war.
