Belgium freezes a record amount of Russian assets

Overall, the proposals concern 1,789 Russian companies and individuals included in the sanctions list.

The Belgian Ministry of Finance within a year since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has frozen 58 billion euros of Russian assets of individuals and legal entities. This was said on Monday, February 27, in a statement by Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem on the occasion of the anniversary of the active phase of the war in Ukraine.

“The Belgian Ministry of Finance has frozen 58 billion euros of Russian assets, which is the largest amount among all EU member states,” he stressed.

As the minister noted, the financial transactions of the Russian Federation in the amount of 191 billion euros were also blocked, which are related to 1,789 companies and citizens of the terrorist state included in the list of sanctions of the EU.

In connection with sanctions, Belgium intensified customs checks against Russia and Belarus: a total of 91,020 declarations for these states were checked, and 7,925 containers were physically inspected.

Van Peteghem indicated that he actively promotes close coordination within the European Union in the application of sanctions.

Belgian authorities are investigating the presence of a Russian “spy ship” in the North Sea that was spotted in November.

The Ukrainian military was trained to use underwater drones by representatives of the Belgian Ministry of Defense.
