On February 24, the European Union again failed to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia.
Reuters recalls that the negotiations are stuck for the third day. This time the stumbling block was the rubber trade with Russia. Poland has rejected Italy’s demand to ease new restrictions on rubber imports to the EU.
Warsaw stated that the proposal provided for such a large quota of seized imports and such long transition periods that they would have no effect in practice.
Edits to the package were made at the request of Italy, supported by Germany, journalists’ sources say.
Earlier, Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported that the adoption of the new package was planned to be adopted by the anniversary of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. According to him, the approval of the package is also slowed down due to the position of a number of EU countries that oppose the proposed fines for reporting on the location of Russian state assets. The EU wants to direct these funds to the restoration of Ukraine.
